TOMBOLA! (2017) Participatory performance at Izolyatsia, Kyiv, Ukraine. Collaboration with Vicki Thornton. A cacophony of chance, and possible synchronicity. While nostalgic British TV game show catchphrases celebrating unearned material acquisition play out in the space, the audience themselves are invited to perform multiple absurd scripts constructed from the fortune-cookie-like phrases printed on the back of receipts from the Ukrainian supermarket chain Silpo. The soundstage-like terrain becomes so overladen with absurd text that it melts into a background upon which perhaps something more might emerge. What does it mean when nothing means anything and everything means nothing? Is it all just a performance? Is any one performance of any more inherent 'meaning' than any other? Documentation comming soon.
